This illustrated talk looks at the support which the poor received in 19th-century Sussex - in and out of the workhouse. The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act was described by one contemporary commentator as “a measure of extreme harshness and cruelty” and Dr Rudling will compare the support received before and after the Act, with details of individual relief recipients and officials.
