Libellous Letters in Littlehampton – the truth behind Wicked Little Letters

West Sussex Library Service, Littlehampton
A talk by West Sussex Record Office With the recent release of ‘Wicked Little Letters’ there has been a buzz across West Sussex. Wanting to learn more, Vicky Evans (Searchroom Archivist at the West Sussex Record Office) delved deeper into the true stories surrounding Rose Gooding and Edith Swan in order to write her blog Libellous Letters in Littlehampton. Following this, she realised that this alone was not enough to satisfy her curiosity and has now gone many steps further by adding that all-important Littlehampton context to Rose and Edith’s stories. Vicky will be taking a broader look into the social structures and attitudes of the time and how this could have impacted these women’s lives in the 1920s. Lastly, she will explore what happened to both women after all was said and done. Tickets £8 available from Littlehampton Library.

Lucky Breeze: the rise and fall of the British Airship Service – a talk

Rustington Heritage Association, Littlehampton
Between 1918 and 1930, Major George Herbert Scott CBE, AFC, was his generation's preeminent airship pilot and engineer. After leading the pioneering transatlantic airship flights, he went on to design the mooring masts for the R100 and R101. He was appointed Officer in Charge of what would become the tragic last flight of the R101, resulting in the end of the airship industry. This illustrated talk by Mike Scott Rumble looks at Scott’s career and examines the factors which led to that final journey of no return. Entry for paid-up Rustington Heritage Association members is free. Entry for visitors (space permitting) £3, payable at the door. Mike’s talk replaces the “Murders & Misdemeanours in Chichester” talk that was originally scheduled for this date.

Murders and Misdemeanours in Chichester – a talk by Philip MacDougall

Rustington Heritage Association, Littlehampton
This talk looks at a number of notorious crimes that have, over time, beset the Chichester area. They range from the murderous drunken assault upon a soldier recruited into the army of George III to the discovery, in the 1950s, of an unknown and decapitated body in the waters of Chichester Harbour. Through these crimes – each a cause celebre in its day – the talk provides a fascinating survey of early policing methods within this particular corner of West Sussex – and an insight into how the detection of crime has developed. All are welcome at this talk. Entry for visitors £3, payable at the door. Entry for paid-up Rustington Heritage Association members is free.

Wicked Little Letters

Ferring Community Cinema, Worthing
Ferring Community Cinema will be showing their next film, ‘Wicked Little Letters’ on Friday 12th July. It’s the 1920s, a time before X or Twitter and YouTube when if you wanted to vent your rage, you had to write a letter - and in the seaside town of Littlehampton, someone is doing just that! Wicked Little Letters is based on the true story of two neighbours; the deeply conservative Edith Swan, played by the remarkable Olivia Colman and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding, played by Jessie Buckley. When Edith and her fellow residents start to receive letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women, led by Police Officer Gladys Moss, begin to investigate the crime, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose might not be the culprit after all. Filmed in Arundel and Worthing, so hopefully lots to recognise, and being described as “The British Comedy of the Year”, Wicked Little Letters is one not to miss. The film will be showing at Ferring Village Hall. Tickets are £6 and available at the North Ferring Co-Op, the Premier Stores in South Ferring, and on the door on the night. Ticket price includes tea, coffee or a soft drink and biscuits. Doors open at 6.30pm for a prompt 7pm start.
