The Mods and the Rockers were two conflicting British youth subcultures of the late 1950s to mid-1960s, in the post-war era when young people found they now had more money to spare and more independence. In his illustrated talk, Chris Horlock will explore the social and historical background to the notorious seaside clashes between the two groups, especially at what was known as the “Battle of Brighton” in 1964. National newspapers talked of a “moral panic”, though the media sometimes encouraged the aggression, as Chris will explain.
