Jeremy Prescott tells the story of how the poppy has become the flower and symbol of remembrance. “In Flanders Fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses, row by row” is the famous opening of Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae’s 1915 poem and in 1922 Major George Howson MC received a grant of £2,000 to establish the Poppy Factory employing disabled service personnel. A century later the poppy remains a potent reminder of the sacrifices of those killed or injured in wars – a reminder that sometimes appears in spectacular form such as the project "Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red" at the Tower of London in 2014.
