Ferring Community Cinema's next film is The Penguin Lessons.
This charming comedy is based on a book of the same title by Tom Michell. It chronicles the author’s experience of rescuing a penguin from an oil slick in Uruguay and taking it back to the school where he taught in Argentina.
Steve Coogan plays Tom, a disillusioned Englishman who, in 1976, goes to work in a school in Argentina. He expects to find the job easy, but discovers a divided nation and a class of unteachable students. Having rescued the penguin, he decides to take it back to school. The penguin, who he names Juan Salvador, follows him everywhere and inevitably changes everything for Tom and for those around him.
The Penguin Lessons shines with warmth and charm, in part, I’m sure, because the penguin is an actual penguin – not a CGI creation!
