Although Rhoda Garrett is not as well known as the Pankhursts in the campaign for votes for women, she was arguably the most prominent and influential speaker on women's suffrage in the 19th Century. She shared a house in Rustington with her cousin Agnes and together they ran an interior design business, the first UK business to be registered and run by women. Their other cousins were Millicent Fawcett and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, important names in the fight for women’s rights.
