Relief of the Poor in 19th Century Sussex – a talk by Dr Mary Rudling

Rustington Heritage Association, Rustington

The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act was described by one contemporary commentator as “a measure of extreme harshness and cruelty” and Dr Rudling will compare the support received before and after the Act, with details of individual relief recipients and officials.
Entry to the talk is free for paid-up members of Rustington Heritage Association. Visitors £5 (cash only) payable at the door. All admissions subject to availability of seats on arrival. Why not become a member? Just £15 per person per annum for free entry to all our talks in 2026.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues

Ferring Community Cinema, Worthing
Ferring Community Cinema will be showing their next film, ‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continueson Friday 12th June.

Legendary faux rockers, Spinal Tap, return in this comedy 'mockusequel' about the band’s contractually enforced, and horribly ill-fated one-off reunion gig in New Orleans. It’s their first time playing together in 15 years, since a mysterious reported row between David and Nigel brought the Tap bandwagon to a halt.

The band members have established other careers, all a long way from their rock band days, and do not relish the idea of being forced into this final reunion gig.

With an impressive cast that includes Christoper Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Rob Reiner, and Kerry Godliman – and Elton John and Paul McCartney in what must be smallish parts! – this film looks like it will be fun.

The film will be showing at Ferring Village Hall. Tickets are £6 and available at the North Ferring Co-Op, the Premier Stores in South Ferring, and on the door on the night. Ticket price includes tea, coffee or a soft drink, and biscuits. Doors open at 6.30pm for a prompt 7pm start.

Ferring Community Cinema is a not-for-profit organisation with profits donated to Ferring Village Hall and other national charities.

Pewter Cuttlefish Casting Workshop - Make Your Own Pendant or Keyring

Fleur Grenier, Angmering
Make your own pewter pendant or keyring - No experience necessary, Fleur will guide you through the process step by step, ideal for complete beginners or experienced metalworkers who would like to try working with pewter.

Using the traditional pewter cuttlefish casting technique you will carve your design into a cuttlefish bone. This will then be used as a mould to pour the molten pewter into.

Finally you will clean up your casting and make it into a pendant or keyring ready to use.

At the end of the workshop you will have 2-3 pieces to take home and use.

History People Guided Walk - Saints & Sinners

Chris Hare, Worthing
WORTHING HERITAGE FESTIVAL. West Tarring includes the only truly ancient street in the borough of Worthing. Tarring High Street includes both medieval and Tudor-era buildings. This wonderful street was nearly lost to a road widening scheme in the late 1920s, so we are very fortunate to still enjoy it today. Two saints are associated with West Tarring, one a bishop and one an archbishop. The village history has plenty of sinners as well, including a smuggling magistrate and a murdering churchwarden. Due to narrow streets this walk in limited to 25 people, so please book early to avoid disappointment. Those joining the walk will be given a photocopy of a Victorian map of the village to keep.
