Rustington Heritage Association, Rustington
The South of England has a host of historic industries, the signs of many of which are with us today - glass in the Surrey Weald and iron in Sussex and Kent, as well as shipbuilding, a huge variety of agricultural industries, seaside leisure industries and the military industries at naval bases and fortifications. Rise of the Mods and Rockers - a talk by Chris Horlock

East Preston & Kingston Preservation Society, East Preston
The Mods and the Rockers were two conflicting British youth subcultures of the late 1950s to mid-1960s, in the post-war era when young people found they now had more money to spare and more independence. In his illustrated talk, Chris Horlock will explore the social and historical background to the notorious seaside clashes between the two groups, especially at what was known as the “Battle of Brighton” in 1964. National newspapers talked of a “moral panic”, though the media sometimes encouraged the aggression, as Chris will explain.

Admission is free for paid-up members of the East Preston & Kingston Preservation Society. Visitors £3, payable at the door. All admissions are subject to the availability of seats on arrival.

Travel in the Past - The Problems and Pleasures of the Journey

Rustington Heritage Association, Rustington
Travel in the past was not easy, and Sussex was notorious for its bad roads. It was not until the mid-18th century when Turnpike Acts improved the county’s roads, that journeys became less of a problem. This illustrated talk by Dr Janet Pennington takes in regions around London and further afield, looking at horses, coaches and plenty of Sussex mud. It will make you glad you have a car or can catch a bus or a train. Even walking could be better than coach travel in the 17th century!
Visitors £3, payable at the door. Rustington Heritage Association members free. All admissions subject to availability of seats on arrival.

Shoreham Fort – an illustrated talk by Gary Baines

Rustington Heritage Association, Rustington
Shoreham Fort, completed in 1857 to protect against a feared invasion by the French Emperor Napoleon III, is a prototype for all the Palmerston Forts, including Fort Nelson in Portsmouth. The fort is the last of its kind and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It has a unique and diverse history, not only as part of the country’s defences from the 19th century up to both world wars but it was also used as a very early film studio in 1913. This talk by Gary Baines, chairman and founder of the Friends of Shoreham Fort, will update us on the fort’s history and its ongoing restoration.

Visitors £3, payable at the door. Rustington Heritage Association members free. All admissions subject to availability of seats on arrival.
