Voyage en Indochine

Tonight's talk takes us into the countries bordering the Mekong River, including Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, formerly part of the French colony of Indochine.  

We are a friendly group of Francophiles who meet every second Tuesday of the month. All levels of French are welcome and there will be visuals to help. Chat and social starts at 7.15pm with the talk starting at 7.30pm. Visitors £5 a visit.

FOR VALOUR: THE VICTORIA CROSS STORY - a talk by Jeremy Prescott

Instituted in 1856, the Victoria Cross is Britain's joint-highest award for gallantry. It requires an act of extreme bravery in the presence of the enemy, and has achieved almost mythical status, with recipients often revered as heroes. Jeremy Prescott will tell the story of this prestigious award. Entry is free for paid up members of Rustington Heritage Association. Visitors £5 (cash only) payable at the door. Our talk this month is by Laurie Wickwire – Murano Glass: The Jewel of Venice.
We explore how Murano became the epicentre of glassmaking worldwide. After discovering how Venice was built, we take a short gondola ride to the island of Murano. Here, we learn of the many enduring styles of Murano glass and delve into the lives of these ancient artisans.

Doors open 9.30am. Everyone welcome. Guests £7 on the door. Coffee & biscuits available.

From the earliest silent films in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through to the vibrant mid-20th century era, this talk will explore the pioneers of filmmaking in the region and memorable moments that helped shape British film history. Ellen will also highlight some recent 21st-century films shot in Worthing, ensuring you won’t miss seeing your town on the big screen!

Based on extensive research featured in Electric Pictures: A Guide to the Films, Film-Makers and Cinemas of Worthing and Shoreham, this illustrated talk will delight film enthusiasts and local history buffs alike.
Copies of the book will be available to purchase on the day for £5 (cash only).

ONE FOR THE BOYS - AND SOMETHING FOR THE GIRLS

Rustington Heritage Association, Rustington
Nigel & Wendy Gossop give a light-hearted illustrated talk about two very British institutions that became “The Boy’s Own Paper” and “The Girl’s Own Paper”. First published in 1879/1880, these became essential reading for generations of young people until the 1960s. BOP promoted manliness and chivalry, while GOP offered honest sound advice. Both papers published stories by established writers, including Jules Verne and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Our talk this month is by Chris Aslan - Unravelling the Silk Road 
Wool, silk, and cotton have each played a part in the fortunes of Central Asia. Silk was more valuable than gold and used as a currency, creating a network of trading routes that led to globalisation .  Silk Road products stratified wealth , displayed religious and political entrenchments and changed the fortunes of this part of the world

British political and commercial dominance of much of the world during the 19th century gave unprecedented opportunities for Britons willing to leave their native land. However, although some succeeded far better than if they'd stayed at home, others faced disappointment or even death.
 Dr Frances Hurd is a historical researcher living in Chichester. She has worked in publishing, academia and the heritage sector.
